7. Without My Lord [When the Rain Comes In] Our little house is leaking. Not from the outside, but from its very structure. Walls bowing in, ceiling discolored. The stomping from upstairs sending little chunks of plaster down on us while we sleep. There’s a pump in the basement, but it’s broken and keeps flooding our rehearsal nook and the bed where I sleep. You are broken from the death of your mother, but in love. I am sick with exhaustion and pneumonia, but in love. We are quite a pair. Bret starts coming around again, I’m dabbling in the tarot. Once I ask him ‘choose a card’ and he picks the Eight of Cups. The next day you do the same. And, turning the trick around on me, I do too. Three of a kind. Chalices overflowing. Grapes rotting on the vine. Looking at our damp sagging walls. We certainly do drink too much.
lyrics
When the rain comes in, when the rain comes in
I will hide away and plan, I will hide away and plan
When the rain gets high, when the rain gets high
I will rise and write my lord, I will rise and write my lord
With the strength of filling out forms.
Alone in my room with its patterned shelves
The walls are white and there’s nothing else
Just me and myself and my splitting cells
Alone in my room, there’s no one else.
I’ve come to believe that all we are
Are just banks waiting to be robbed
I’ve been a scholar ran a parlor and I’ve labored down below
But what have I to show?
A closet full of bone white button downs
Penny loafers took the pennies out
A pocket full of tricks and gears
To keep the conversation greased and going
And I know it’s been explained to me before
But alone now in my room I’ve got time to think it over.
But I just can’t sleep without my lord,
I just can’t sleep without my lord,
I just can’t sleep without my lord,
And I pray they’ll come again,
I pray they’ll come again,
I pray they’ll come again.
