I’ve got a pocket full of dollars We’re out here on the road Somewhere between the heavens Where the sun don’t go Started off in NJ Big hearts and balding tires Got a boombox in the back seat Gonna set that map on fire. I should have packed galoshes Lord’s been leaking from the sky The most important rule for traveling is You better keep your feet dry Cleveland in the evening Cincinnati by the night We pull off at a Waffle House Before first morning light. On the road I got so hungry There’s no honey underground I tried to eat my credit cards But I know that that is not allowed. It’s a nice place that we’re going It’s a nice place that we’ve been I feel like the weight of gravity Is pulling us back in Just crossed into Nebraska When I felt my eyes go closed Heard the buzzing of the shoulder Slept on the side there by the road Police woke us with their flashlights Said it’s time you’re moving on I got a pocket full of dollars You got an idea for a song. The boombox in the backseat Is out of batteries If we make it to Colorado I gotta make an apology. On the road I stumbled On the road I fell On the road I stumbled Lay me down, Won’t you lay me down. Out here we do the flying Out here our hair grows long Thank god I got you with me I wouldn’t make it on my own When we arrive you’ll get that feeling That you never had in life There will be angels and they’ll be singing Out of every single light And banquet tables filled up With all the sweetest tastes When the sun is finally setting You’ll be in your favorite place. On the road I got so hungry There’s no honey underground I tried to eat my credit cards But I know that that is not allowed. On the road I stumbled On the road I fell On the road I stumbled Lay me down. Wring me out.

Put the gun in your mouth And then we’ll start talking There was never a chance This was gonna go your way Some people are saints Some are absolute monsters But we all walk the edge Of that shiny razor blade I will be coming back for you. There is no place to hide So I might as well keep on Rolling right along That’s what I tell myself when the going gets tough If it doesn’t hurt Then you’re just not doing it right That’s some terrible advice A terrible metaphor for life I will be coming back for you. She blew off your head And then danced on the carpet I was behind the curtain I saw the whole thing clear as day The dance of the snakes The dance of the tyrants The dance of the lamb Pulling their chariot of flames I will be coming back for you. A radio played as I ran away From the place you lay From the scene you made A voice on the AM faded out and then Faded in again whispered amen. When the smoke finally clears And the party’s finally over I return to the room To claim what I can claim But you have disappeared And in your place is just a pile Of loose leaf papers Thoughts you’d had along the way I will be coming back for you. I will be coming back for you. I will be coming back for you.

Now you’ve got a hat on your head And a word for your life Cause you couldn’t change You wouldn’t lie About who you were What you wanted to be You ran out the front door And you climbed up a tree Oooo you got a rule for your mouth I wish you’d say it plain I wish that I knew What you were talking about When you climbed up your tree Looked down at the world Said it’s a world you couldn’t see And it opened your eyes. You’re strange And this is why we love you Cause you’re out of control Something we once believed in And never let go This is why we love you Cause you’re out of your mind One thing we can count on You’ll be back in time. Oooo you’re like the room that we’ve forgotten You’re what’s under the tape Make your moves now in silence And let the bough break When you climbed up your tree Looked down at the world Now we can never go back To the way things were. You’re strange And this is why we love you Cause you’re out of control Something we once believed in And never let go Yes this is why we love you Cause you’re out of your mind One thing we can count on You’ll be back in time.

Canto XIV 04:03
Oooo Baby! Oooo Baby! Paradiso, Canto XIV You’re in heaven But you’re supposed to be by my side Went before me Beamed your starry eyes up into the sky And heaven held you Heaven help me Sing a sweet song while I’m waiting I’m not patient I’ll be breaking down St. Peter’s pearly gates. If I could find you, What I do then Have the same conversation we were always talking over You gotta stop Tim, taking everything So serious when we’re just water You’re probably hanging with the sirens Or in bed with that tall girl that you had your eye on Come round the corner there you are Head enshrined in gold. [Oh, Hello.] I see you’re speaking a different language And it’s one that I do not understand And let’s be honest, I can’t see you But I know you’re still my friend Now that I’ve found you I’m going to keep you Going to handcuff you to that root growing from the ground No more bad habits see I need you to come back down. We used to talk about how the ocean it is changing But it always stays the same How about some devotion Head in the clouds now take that moonlight off your face. You told me that river was supposed to make me forget everything But I remember Paradiso and Canto XIV You said that river was suppose to make me forget everything But ain’t it just like a river to never stay the same You never stayed the same, just like a river. You would want me to be gentle, sing a sweet song But when I find you I’m going to kill you Going to break your fucking heart just the same way You broke mine apart And I’ll meet you after recess In a parking lot outside of time And I’ll climb up to the right until I find you And drag you out of paradise.

Push On 05:48
And so it was to sea with me With anyone who’d flee with me Hours turn to days and days into weeks The sun seems to shine from above and beneath. Far from the homes where we belong We’ve called our ship the vagabond Days turn to months blow away in the wind The sun seems to shine from without and within. We push on, Send us strength for we mush push on We push on, In the eye of a gathering storm We push on, Send us strength for we must push on We push on. Rudderless we toss upon the waves Nevertheless we are on our way Desperately at sea the way we’ve always been The sun seems to shine from without and within. We push on, Send us strength for we mush push on We push on In the eye of a gathering storm We push on, Send us strength for we must push on We push on. We push on. We push on. We push on. We push on.

When the rain comes in, when the rain comes in I will hide away and plan, I will hide away and plan When the rain gets high, when the rain gets high I will rise and write my lord, I will rise and write my lord With the strength of filling out forms. Alone in my room with its patterned shelves The walls are white and there’s nothing else Just me and myself and my splitting cells Alone in my room, there’s no one else. I’ve come to believe that all we are Are just banks waiting to be robbed I’ve been a scholar ran a parlor and I’ve labored down below But what have I to show? A closet full of bone white button downs Penny loafers took the pennies out A pocket full of tricks and gears To keep the conversation greased and going And I know it’s been explained to me before But alone now in my room I’ve got time to think it over. But I just can’t sleep without my lord, I just can’t sleep without my lord, I just can’t sleep without my lord, And I pray they’ll come again, I pray they’ll come again, I pray they’ll come again.

Looking for meaning in the small things I track them down, Track them down everywhere I turn There’s meaning in the small things I’m listening in I’m listening in I want to learn. I been running out of runway But I can’t take off and I can’t turn off And I can’t slow down There’s someone up above me Can’t shake them off Can’t shake them off Though I twist and I shout Won’t you send me a sign? I’ll follow you down like the man in the river If you send me a sign I’ll follow you down like the man in the river. I leave an offering for the moving patrols The moving patrols I hide in the daylight If there’s meaning in the small things I want to find out Won’t you send me a sign? I’ll follow you down like the man in the river Just send me a sign And I’ll follow you down like a man in a river.

Apples 03:04
I sit by your sick bed Armed with my only weapon A bushel of red apples Will nothing my dear get you better Someone comes to see me It gets so hard to look at you I’m calling for the doctor She’ll write you out She’ll write you out a few. You shout out a warning The breath you use shallow and cloying I can see that morning It’s echoed in the words you wrote Machines all start to whirring Some hearts are stopped and some are stirring Memories like falling down Bright red apples brought from town. We wore the same clothes on a Wednesday Island shirts with button sleeves Promised to be your best friend I tried my best but fell asleep The next time that I see you Is in my dreams it’s sour sweet Friends of steam make lemon tea Sometimes an apple’s all you need.

We’ve heard this me, my, mine A million times Now it feels like I might rain Hold me down in the tub And wash this gutter love off of my hands. Until I’m endless Your intents had best be relevant So sick of this wish washing Time tick-tocking Mine is lost I hope it comes across. When you leave me. Vague auguries. All I wanted was a partnership On which to sail my weary lips But who Was it always you My vanished everything And now love has a word It’s a rhyme I’ve heard That flies through the trees And sings from beneath. That you will leave me Vague auguries And you will leave me Vague auguries.

Where will we go when the birds are gone? We’ll sing the bird song, sing the bird song. Tie your shoes, it’s time for leaving I heard the beating of their wings The birds won’t be back again Our best and brightest will form a line March into the great beyond All sensitive and strong. Your soul’s a feather Your armor is your soul Your dreams become a compass When you don’t know where to go Your heart’s a ladder It’s a stairway we can climb But the ways are difficult We go one day at a time Where will we go when the birds are gone We’ll sing the bird song, sing the bird song. Are those your fingers Or a fistful of feathers that you hold The day is clear and bright But the question are you bold It takes believing It takes a hunger in your spine To leave this all behind To burst forth from the pines Oh thunder bolts and lighting crash Around our bodies in flight We fly I’ll stop holding you back Yeah that’s the least that you deserve And I cry that we’re all birds Until I run out of words. Where will we go when the birds are gone We’ll sing the bird song, sing the bird song.

Every morning I wake up Hear the sounding of the bells Celebrating the death of a martyr And I’ve started pausing when I walk past Watch the light cascading down Through the stained glass. I told myself for you I’d try and pray But it seems that today will not be that day I shuffle on back towards my apartment And I take off my mask but I can’t go in I just stand there staring at the sky Light cascading down like your blue eyes. And then it starts raining Clear blue sky It starts raining Is this a sign? Bret took your notebooks Lauren got you scars And your sister gave me Your electric guitar Now it just sits in the living room Like a sacred thing Beneath our old cat’s ashes And a blue painting. It started raining Out of the blue It started raining And I thought of you. On the way to your memorial I lost my ID Been feeling incorporeal Since I’ve been back I’ll wait in line forever at the DMV For something I can’t recover And who wants that Could be a fate worse than death I hold my breath Get in line and take a number And when that bell sounds It’ll be my turn.

about

Apples is a memorial album for Barry Brock Reardon, released on 1/29/21 to mark the one year anniversary of his passing. We suspect Barry was one of the first Covid-19 related deaths in the US, but we will never be sure. He was my best friend, my navigator, and my favorite songwriter.

"The flowery plot was a sight to see,
A sea of whisky for pip so intricate and wee."
