9. Send Me a Sign [Baby, Let Me Follow You Down] Years ago, watching a film at the Provincetown Film Festival. An asthmatic 10 year old who, upon discovering gold, faces a moral conundrum. Struggling, his big sister gives him advice in the form of a bible story. Something like: John the Baptist was never a baptist until Jesus bumped into him and asked to be baptized by him. No, John said. No. I’m not a baptist. I’m just a guy in a river. And Jesus said something like through the act of doing a thing, you will be come worthy of doing it. Despite my disinterest in the bible, that story always stuck with me. Our band is finally touring. Us finally as we were meant to be. If just for a moment. Still, Over the Moon.
lyrics
Looking for meaning in the small things
I track them down,
Track them down everywhere I turn
There’s meaning in the small things
I’m listening in I’m listening in I want to learn.
I been running out of runway
But I can’t take off and I can’t turn off
And I can’t slow down
There’s someone up above me
Can’t shake them off
Can’t shake them off
Though I twist and I shout
Won’t you send me a sign?
I’ll follow you down like the man in the river
If you send me a sign
I’ll follow you down like the man in the river.
I leave an offering for the moving patrols
The moving patrols
I hide in the daylight
If there’s meaning in the small things
I want to find out
Won’t you send me a sign?
I’ll follow you down like the man in the river
Just send me a sign
And I’ll follow you down like a man in a river.
