about

15. Clear Blue Sky [I Walk By Churches] This is just a collection of things I think you’d like - or maybe that remind me of you. Piano like Paul might have done for his John. An echo of the Ode to Joy (that greatest ode to friendship sung through the poetry of loss). A bad joke at the important part, like a trick the Mountain Goats might do. I can still hear you scoffing at my arrogance. This whole beautiful cosmic explosion, and we stand in a long bureaucratic line waiting for someone to stamp our papers. The night before we said goodbye we stayed up late in your basement digging through piles of pictures, records, letters, sheet music. One box contained your mom’s baby shoes. Got drunk and called a cab at 2 am. The driver told us how his father lost use of his hand from a stroke but rehabilitated himself by learning the banjo. He helped me unload your guitar from the trunk.

lyrics

Every morning I wake up
Hear the sounding of the bells
Celebrating the death of a martyr
And I’ve started pausing when I walk past
Watch the light cascading down
Through the stained glass.
I told myself for you I’d try and pray
But it seems that today will not be that day
I shuffle on back towards my apartment
And I take off my mask but I can’t go in
I just stand there staring at the sky
Light cascading down like your blue eyes.
And then it starts raining Clear blue sky
It starts raining
Is this a sign?
Bret took your notebooks
Lauren got you scars
And your sister gave me
Your electric guitar
Now it just sits in the living room
Like a sacred thing
Beneath our old cat’s ashes
And a blue painting.
It started raining
Out of the blue
It started raining
And I thought of you.
On the way to your memorial
I lost my ID
Been feeling incorporeal
Since I’ve been back
I’ll wait in line forever at the DMV
For something I can’t recover
And who wants that
Could be a fate worse than death
I hold my breath
Get in line and take a number
And when that bell sounds
It’ll be my turn.
