about

10. Apples [The Machines That Keep Us Alive] I was looking out at a horizon of hot air, Bitterroot Valley summer. From my backseat I wondered if there were doors in the air, little holes that birds could rest in. Something like you might see in Bandolier but for the flying things that exist between dimensions. Cliff dwellings in the walls of eternity. There’s so much we don’t know. What if our eyes worked a little better? I could have sworn, if I looked hard enough, I could just barely see them.

lyrics

I sit by your sick bed
Armed with my only weapon
A bushel of red apples
Will nothing my dear get you better
Someone comes to see me
It gets so hard to look at you
I’m calling for the doctor
She’ll write you out
She’ll write you out a few.
You shout out a warning
The breath you use shallow and cloying
I can see that morning
It’s echoed in the words you wrote
Machines all start to whirring
Some hearts are stopped and some are stirring
Memories like falling down
Bright red apples brought from town.
We wore the same clothes on a Wednesday
Island shirts with button sleeves
Promised to be your best friend
I tried my best but fell asleep
The next time that I see you
Is in my dreams it’s sour sweet
Friends of steam make lemon tea
Sometimes an apple’s all you need.
